Moving to a new place can be exciting and stressful. You have many things to take care of and people to notify about the change.
To ensure you don’t forget anyone, we’ve compiled a handy change of address checklist of everyone to notify when you move.
Change of Address Checklist: Who to Notify When You Change Your Address
1. Government Agencies
Notifying local authorities about your move is important, especially if you receive government funds and benefits.
Department of Motor Vehicles
The United States Postal Service (USPS)
Social Security
Other benefits (e.g., disability, retirement, survivor benefits, supplemental security income, etc.)
Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
Voter registration
2. Financial Services
Prevent identity theft and protect your loans, investments, credit cards, and savings by updating your address on your financial records.
Credit card companies
Banks and investment companies
Accountants and tax consultants
Loan providers
3. Insurance Providers
Some insurance providers base their premiums on where you live, so they’ll need to know when you move out, how to contact you, and where to send your bills. Make sure to update your address on the following when you move:
Car insurance
Medical insurance
Life insurance
Renters or homeowners insurance
4. Utilities
Update your address with utility companies at least a month before moving so you can look forward to running water and electricity as soon as you get to your new place.
You may also need to transfer or cancel services if you’re moving across the country or beyond state lines.
Internet and data services
Electricity and gas
Water
Home security services
Garbage and recycling
5. Subscription Services
To ensure you receive your bills on time and aren’t charged for services you aren’t using, cancel your subscription services or update them to your new address.
Doing so also prevents online deliveries from ending up on the wrong doorstep.
Subscription boxes
Gym memberships
Retail shopping services (e.g., Costco, Amazon Prime, etc.)
Print subscriptions (e.g., newspapers, magazines, etc.)
Streaming services
Smart home apps
6. Location-Based Apps
It’s easy to get lost if you still need to change your Home address on your maps or transportation apps.
Transportation apps (e.g., Lyft, Uber, etc.)
Map apps (e.g., Google Maps, Waze, Apple Maps, etc.)
Payment services (e.g., Paypal, Venmo, etc.)
7. Doctors, Lawyers, etc.
Keeping these people informed of your new address lets you stay on top of important meetings, notifications, or appointments.
Doctors and dentists
Veterinarian
Employer
Clients
Lawyer
